Americans may be obsessed with therapy as a nation, but every pet owner will confirm that there is no psychiatrist in the world like a puppy licking your face! Maybe that is why, according to a 2023 study by Pew Research Centre, 97 percent of pet owners in the US consider them as a part of their family.

Pets sure have a more humanizing effect on us than our fellow humans themselves. They remind us we have an obligation and responsibility to preserve, nurture, and care for all life. And with this responsibility to protect, comes a moral obligation to ensure they lead a healthy life. Of course, this brings into the picture the financial aspect of this as well.

The American Pet Products Association has estimated that Americans spent $147 billion on their animals in 2023, including $38 billion on their healthcare. With such big bucks at stake, the pet insurance industry does not remain unsusceptible to scams, either.

To put this in perspective, at least 17 states across the country assessed at least $1.5 million in fines for violations by the pet insurance industry since 2013 — and ordered close to $5 million in restitution to customers.

But this may be the tip of the fraud-iceberg. Fraud thrives in the shadow of trust. It is the experiences of these unassuming pet owners who find themselves duped by hundreds of dollars in premiums without seeing any of their claims reimbursed that paint a dark picture of the pet insurance industry.

Understanding Pet Insurance

Depending on the terms of your policy, Pet insurance can provide a wide range of cover for your pet – from the cost of veterinary treatment, a pay-out if your pet should die, be lost or stolen, or cover if your pet harms someone or damages property.

Just like in health insurance for humans, pet owners pay a monthly premium, and after they’ve paid a vet bill, they submit it to the insurer to try to get their money back.

Also, just as with human health insurance, there are deductible copays and annual limits on how much the policy will pay out.

Broadly speaking, there are three categories of pet insurance:

Accident only;

Accident and illness; and

Accident, illness, and wellness(which includes dental and vaccines).

As a thumb rule, the more coverage you add, the higher your premium goes. Of course, there are other factors, like the age of the pet and any preexisting disease conditions, to calculate the final premium. So if you insure your dog Roger at 6 months of age, the premium you will pay will be substantially lesser than if Roger was to be, say, 8 years old. This is because health deteriorates with age, and the safe bet for insurance companies is that the 6-month-old Roger is more unlikely to file for reimbursements than his 8-year-old counterpart.

As we mentioned, Americans consider their pets as their family. So pet insurance is not just a hard-core practical decision coldly calculated to come up with a final number to conclude whether it makes financial sense or not. Some pet owners would rather cough up thousands of dollars in their lifetime just to feel at ease that they are doing the best for them.

However, others, who might just be as emotionally attached to their pets, may have to take the hard decision to discontinue medical treatment if they cannot bear this huge financial burden, with or without pet insurance(pet insurance often has a limit on how much can be reimbursed.)

Hence, while acknowledging any of these decisions with a non-judgemental attitude, we have to factor in the personal and emotional side of the equation as well.

The scams that shadow the pet insurance industry

Now that we have briefly described the pet insurance product to you, we must get you familiar with all the disclaimers, too! As it is, it may be difficult to paint a rosy picture of it when it is making news for various sketchy reasons and scams. Some of these scams that have especially caught our eye are:

1. The ‘Nationwide’ Withdrawal

Nationwide, regarded as the largest pet insurer in the country with 1.2 million animals covered, disclosed in mid-June 2024 that it would shed 100,000 policies over the next year.

Now, to understand how pet insurance works, we should know that premiums on pet insurance coverage increase with each year, which adds to the pet’s age. So there was an unsaid compact between the pet insurer and the pet owner. Buy the policy when your pet is young, stick with us, and we will take care of them when their health declines due to age.

Also, getting comparable insurance coverage with another company is usually not possible because most companies do not cover preexisting conditions under their insurance coverage. So if you got your dog insured with Nationwide when he was eight and he developed cancer when he was 10 years old, Nationwide may be obligated to cover the vet charges. But if you switch to another company, this will be a preexisting condition for them because it happened before you bought their policy and hence they are not liable to reimburse you.

Nationwide policyholders who will have their policy discontinued will be stranded in a lurch despite paying hundreds of dollars in premiums. Thus, such a big company bailing out on its policyholders breaks the basic promise of pet insurance. It is sure to create a trust deficit for this insurance product as a whole.

It also flies in the face of advice given by many veterinarians to buy insurance coverage for your pets when they are young to reap the benefits later.

2. The Trupanion Fiasco

The way to legal recourse is also difficult and mired in uncertainty.

This is because pet insurance isn’t technically even health insurance. Rather, it falls in the property-and-casualty category and is generally regulated pretty lightly by states.

Because 50 states and the District of Columbia together have 51 different versions of rules for pet insurance, insurance companies often take advantage of loopholes to make an easy buck.

At least 10 states have cited Trupanion and its subsidiaries for violating local insurance and fraud laws over the last decade in cases involving thousands of pet insurance policies. The violations range from having unlicensed workers sell insurance, improperly paying fees to veterinarians for encouraging pet owners to buy Trupanion policies, and charging different rates to different customers

3. The Corporatization of pet insurance

A decade ago, pet insurance was run by small businesses and founders with vision. Today, like every other business, it is moving towards corporatization. And like these businesses, the founders who cared about their products are being pushed out. Many of these large businesses are publicly traded, that is, they are ultimately answerable to shareholders for profit margins.

JAB Holding Co, for example, is a German investment firm that is one of the private equity firms that have been buying veterinary practices around the world. In 2024, it owned National Veterinary Associates, which has about 1,400 general and specialty offices in North America.

Why is that relevant? Well, in 2022 and 2023, JAB went on a $4 billion-plus spending spree on pet insurers. As it tries to corporatize the pet insurance product, it has ruffled the feathers of some senators who have demanded explanations for its intentions from the company heads.

4. The skyrocketing premiums

The North American Pet Health Insurance Association found that pet owners in the US paid $3.9 billion in premiums in 2023, a 22% increase from the year before. Anecdotally, however, individual policyholders we spoke to have reported higher premium hikes than the reported average.

One reason, of course, is the cost of veterinary services, which is rising faster than inflation. The U.S. Consumer Price Index shows veterinary services went up 6.2% in the 12 months ending in July compared with 2.9% inflation across the index.

However, the growing corporatization and hunger for profit that follows is an equally significant reason. The premium for pet owners keeps increasing as the pet ages and many pet owners are not able to keep pace with these steep hikes.

As a result, many of them are unable to continue with the police and are left helpless when they need the policy the most in their pet’s old age. The industry lapse rate is estimated at 20 to 30 percent.

However, there is another side to this story. Pet insurers argue that people who have healthy pets end up not continuing with the policy, and hence, insurers are left largely with a population of less healthy animals, which pushes up premiums.

According to them, if there was a zero lapse rate, premiums for all would be less. While this may be true to an extent, the truth of the matter remains that pet owners who need insurance are finding it difficult to keep up with the skyrocketing premiums.

5. Sketchy promotions and False advertising

The pet insurance industry suffers from its shares of false advertising and sketchy promotion strategies that we feel you should be aware of before you venture into the arena as a customer.

One example that we can cite is from Rhode Island. The state Department of Business Regulation found United States Insurance Co. and Spot Pet Insurance Services were improperly trying to induce potential pet insurance customers by offering $25 Amazon gift cards and was ordered to stop.

Another one is Healthy Paws Pet Insurance & Foundation of Washington, which was selling other companies’ pet insurance policies, but deceptively advertising them as their policies in emails and on its website.

The list can go on and on, but we think you get the picture!

What to look for in a pet insurance product?

There are clauses and there are sub-clauses and it is easy to get entangled in the alluring language of policy promises and assured benefits. Yet there are a few details you need to be especially on the look out for. Some of these are:

Comprehensive coverage

Comprehensive coverage will ideally contain accident, illness, and wellness benefits at a reasonable cost. However, different companies offer different benefits, and the most important thing is to read the fine print. Your company may include prescription food coverage, end-of-live benefits, and congenital/hereditary condition coverage.

At the same time, many pet insurance policies don’t cover routine vet care such as vaccinations and annual checkups.

The Preexisting condition clause

As mentioned before, pet insurance companies usually do not reimburse pre-existing disease conditions.

However, pet insurance companies don’t necessarily define “pre-existing conditions” the same way every time. For example, some companies provide coverage for “curable” conditions.

So, be clear on what your selected insurance company considers a ‘pre-existing condition’ and their policy rules around it.

Customizable Policies and Deductibles

Pet insurance companies let you customize your coverage and your deductible. Hence, you can choose to add wellness to your plan, or you can stick to accidents and illnesses only.

Likewise, if you choose a higher deductible, it will lower your monthly pet insurance payment, or you can pick a lower deductible, which will mean a higher monthly premium.

As they say, the devil lies in the details. Some companies have a per-incident or lifetime limits on your policy. So if you hit a lifetime limit on your policy, you’ll have to switch insurance providers. And if you do so, the pre-existing disease condition clause kicks in. That brings us back to the age-old advice: read the fine print!

Avail your discounts

Some companies offer up to 10 percent if you take multi-pet insurance. Also, some companies allow you to club your pet insurance with home insurance, auto insurance etc, which can help you make a reasonable saving. Be sure to ask your selected pet insurance company whether they offer any such product services and dig in for any further discounts that they may have to offer.

Cost of the coverage

When all is said and done, the cost of coverage plays a huge role in zeroing down on the pet insurance plan of your choice. As mentioned above, accident and illness plans charge less premium than wellness plans.

In Fact, according to NAPHIA, the average annual premium rise was 11.4% between 2022 and 2023 for U.S. dogs that had policies including coverage for preventive care and 5.6% for U.S. dogs covered for accidents and illness only.

So if cost is a consideration, you can choose to go for accident and illness plans only. If however, you want to include other facilities like dental in your plan, you may have to get the wellness plan too, but you will have to loosen your purse strings further.

Be Scam Aware

We have listed a few scams above, but be sure to google your pet insurance company before you make the final call. Some of them don’t hold proper licenses and don’t have adequate paperwork, while others may be indulging in shady kickbacks to vets for recommending them.

The reputation of a company is an invaluable asset in building trust with customers, and those with a good reputation will surely have a better chance of living up to their commitment.

Also, when looking online for the best insurance, some websites take commissions from pet insurance companies they endorse, so you cannot take their word for granted.

On this note, we would like to add that we are not one of them. Our recommendations are well-researched and personally verified with many pet owners so that you can take the advice as if from a friend who has taken many rough roads to finally get to the ocean with smooth sails!

The Best Pet Insurance for you

All of the above discussions lead to the final question: what are the best insurance plans that are also not too heavy on the pocket and have the maximum reimbursement rate?

All your research ends here with our recommendations for the best products in pet insurance:

1. Pets Best Insurance

Pets Best offers deductibles as low as $50, has no upper age limit, and has a 24×7 helpline staffed with vet techs and veterinarians for round-the-clock support.

Also, it’s the vets’ favorite as well, and it offers the speediest direct payment to them, so you can be assured of a speedier service if you show up in their practice with your pet’s best insurance under your belt or below your dog’s belly(pun intended)!

It also covers behavioral therapy which is not covered by many other insurances.

However, it offers a 5 percent discount on multiple pets, which is less than most other pet insurance. Also, Exam fees are not included in the basic plan.

Official Link

2. Pumpkin

Pumpkin has an unlimited coverage limit and reimbursement rate as high as 90 percent, making it one of the best pet insurance products on the market. It has no upper age limit (making it senior pet friendly)or breed restrictions, and plans include exam fees and microchipping.

Pumpkin also covers a wide range of illnesses and injuries, including cancer, digestive issues, and hip dysplasia. It only requires a 14-day waiting period for breeds with common hereditary conditions like hip and joint problems, in contrast to other providers which may require waiting periods of up to 60 days.

However, its sample premiums are higher than other insurance companies and it does not have a mobile app.

Official Link

3. Figo

Figo offers a unique 100 percent reimbursement option and a shorter-than-average one-day waiting period for accident coverage.

It also offers plans with lower yearly reimbursement maximums. So, the more you pay in premiums, the less you pay at the time of service. Also, it has a PetsCloud App to make your pet’s record more manageable.

It also provides coverage for non-routine dental care, alternative treatments, and hereditary conditions

However, it does not offer an accident-only policy.

Official Link

4. Embrace

Embrace provides customizable coverage options, including wellness care and specialist consultations. It offers unlimited annual coverage and policies that are not often covered by insurance.

It offers a diminishing deductible feature, reducing the deductible amount each year a claim is not filed. Hence you get more discount each year you file less or no claim. It is also available in all 50 states.

However, it has an upper age limit of 14 years for pets.

Official Link

5. ASPCA Health Insurance

If your pet suffers from a pre-existing condition, this pet insurance is your safest bet. Pet insurers typically exclude pre-existing conditions, but ASPCA Pet Health Insurance considers coverage for curable conditions if your pet has been treated- and symptom-free for at least 180 days.

Its Complete Coverage plan covers alternative therapies like acupuncture and chiropody as well as treatments for behavioral issues, and it comes with a 30-day money-back guarantee.

However, bilateral conditions are not covered under its insurance plan.

Official Link

6. Lemonade

If you are primarily eyeing affordable pet insurance with the speediest claim processing, Lemonade is the pet insurance for you. Lemonade is known for its user-friendly digital platform and utilizes artificial intelligence and chatbots to process claims efficiently.

Also, it offers pet insurance coverage that starts at only$12 monthly. Also, you can club this insurance with your car or rental to get additional discounts.

However, it is not available in only 37 states and does not have a 24×7 tier Healthline for veterinary advice.

Official Link

The Future of Pet Insurance

Some countries have had a very successful experience with pet insurance. In Sweden, where it was first introduced in 1924, the country’s largest pet insurer, Agria, says 92% of dogs, 75% of horses, and 50% of cats are covered.

In comparison, while 6.25 million dogs and cats are insured in the United States and Canada, the proportion of pets covered remains stubbornly low, between 3 and 4%. Hence, even decades after its introduction, its penetration in the market remains low.

However, things are slowly changing with the government taking baby steps into intervention in the earlier unregulated market.

For example, The National Association of Insurance Commissioners adopted a model law in 2022 that recommends that states regulate pet insurance. That guidance included barring insurers from dismissing previously covered pet health issues as a “preexisting condition” during renewals, mandating that insurers communicate a policy’s fine print up front, and giving pet owners 15 days to ask for a refund of a new policy.

On the other hand, to increase pet insurance’s draw in North America, many seasoned veterinarians suggest insurers diversify their offerings, providing options for limited coverage that costs less.

All these events promise an optimistic and healthier future for both pets and pet insurance in the US.

Of course, we need to embrace our roles as enthusiastic citizens and mindful consumers, always keeping an eye on the fine print of policies! Sharing our experiences and supporting each other will help us navigate any bumps along the way.

Together, as a vibrant community of pet lovers, we can ensure that no one experiences the heartache of knowing their furry friends could have been healed with a little extra help. After all, while our pets may not be our entire lives, they truly bring so much joy and completeness to our world!

Sleep is important for everyone but for dogs, it is essential as it helps them recover from daily activities and recharge their energy.

Just like humans, dogs have different ways of resting. Understanding a dog’s sleeping position provides valuable insights into their physical and emotional well-being.

A dog’s sleeping position isn’t random—it’s influenced by their environment, physical state, and emotions. Understanding these factors can help you create a more comfortable and supportive space for your furry friend.

Age: Puppies and senior dogs tend to have different sleeping habits. Puppies often sleep in playful or relaxed positions due to their boundless energy, while older dogs may choose positions that reduce strain on their joints.

Health and Comfort: Dogs experiencing discomfort or pain may avoid positions that put pressure on certain parts of their body. For example, dogs with joint issues might prefer sleeping on their side or belly to reduce strain.

Weather and Temperature: A dog’s sleeping position can change depending on the weather. In colder temperatures, they might curl up to conserve heat, while in warmer weather, they’re likely to sprawl out to cool down.

Breed and Size: Certain breeds naturally prefer specific sleeping styles. Large breeds may stretch out due to their size, while smaller breeds often curl up for warmth and security.

Emotional State: A relaxed dog will often sleep in open, trusting positions, while a dog feeling insecure may choose to hide or sleep curled up. Their posture can reflect how safe and comfortable they feel in their surroundings.

Daily Activity Levels: Active dogs may collapse into deep sleep in any position after a tiring day, while less active dogs may settle into positions that are more deliberate or restful.

How long do dogs sleep?

Dogs generally sleep between 12 to 14 hours per day, although this can vary significantly based on their age, breed, and activity level. Here are some key points to note:

Average Sleep Duration: Most adult dogs sleep about 12 to 14 hours a day, which constitutes roughly half of their daily routine. This average can be influenced by factors such as age and breed.[1]

Puppies and Seniors: Puppies often require more sleep, typically around 18 to 20 hours daily, as they need rest for growth and development. Senior dogs also tend to sleep more, often exceeding the average sleep duration due to decreased energy levels.

Daily Sleep Patterns: Dogs usually sleep longer at night compared to during the day, with nighttime sleep accounting for about 60% to 80% of their total sleep time. Daytime naps are also crucial for adult dogs.[2]

Variability by Breed: Larger breeds may require more sleep than smaller ones, with some breeds sleeping up to 18 hours a day depending on their activity levels and energy expenditure.

A dog’s sleeping patterns and behaviors can reveal much about their health, lifestyle, and emotional state. While sleep may look simple, it involves various phases and activities that are crucial for your dog’s overall well-being.

Sleep Cycles in Dogs: Dogs experience sleep cycles similar to humans, alternating between light sleep, deep sleep, and REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep.

REM Sleep: Dogs dream during this phase, often seen twitching their paws, wagging their tail, or softly whimpering.

Deep Sleep: Essential for physical recovery and growth, this phase helps the body heal and recharge.

Active Sleep Behaviors: It’s common for dogs to move or make noises during sleep.

Ensuring your dog gets quality sleep is essential for their overall health and well-being. Here are several effective strategies to improve your dog’s sleep quality:

Comfortable Sleeping Environment

Place your dog’s bed in a peaceful area of the house, away from loud noises and distractions. A calm environment promotes better sleep.

Choose a bed that suits your dog’s size and comfort preferences. Consider orthopedic or memory foam beds for older dogs to support their joints.

Keep the sleeping area dark and at a comfortable temperature. Dogs generally prefer cooler environments for sleeping.

Reduce noise levels in the sleeping area by using white noise machines or fans if necessary to mask disruptive sounds.

Consistent Routine

Dogs thrive on routine. Set regular times for feeding, walking, and sleeping to help regulate their internal clock.

Incorporate calming activities before bed, such as gentle brushing or short walks, to signal that it’s time to wind down.

Adequate Exercise and Mental Stimulation

Ensure your dog receives sufficient physical activity through walks, playtime, and breed-specific exercises. A tired dog is more likely to sleep well.

Engage your dog with puzzle toys or training sessions to stimulate their mind, which can also help tire them out mentally.

Monitor Diet and Hydration

Avoid large meals close to bedtime to prevent discomfort that might disrupt sleep. Ensure your dog has access to water but limit intake right before bed to reduce nighttime bathroom breaks.

Provide a balanced diet that supports overall health, which can contribute positively to sleep quality.

As we wind up the discussion, here are some interesting and fun facts about dogs and their sleep habits that will make you appreciate your furry friend even more!

Dogs Dream Just Like Humans. During REM sleep, dogs experience dreams. You might notice them twitching, barking softly, or moving their paws—it’s likely they’re dreaming of chasing squirrels or playing fetch!

Dogs Have a Unique Sleep-Wake Cycle. Unlike humans, dogs sleep in shorter bursts, often waking briefly to monitor their surroundings. This instinct comes from their wild ancestors who had to stay alert for predators.

Dogs Can Sleep Anywhere. Dogs are adaptable sleepers! Whether it’s a comfy bed, the couch, or even the floor, they’ll find a spot that works for them.

They Sleep Better Near Their Humans. Studies show dogs feel safer and sleep more soundly when they are close to their owners. This bond enhances their sense of security and relaxation.

Snoring is Breed-Dependent. Flat-faced breeds like Pugs and Bulldogs are more prone to snoring due to their short noses. It’s usually harmless but should be monitored for breathing issues.

Dogs May Experience Sleep Disorders. Just like humans, dogs can suffer from sleep issues like insomnia, narcolepsy, or sleep apnea. These are rare but may require veterinary care.

An Asian at least cannot imagine their diet without ‘rice’ for the comfort it gives with incredible ingredients it has.

Dogs are usually great fans of rice, and they cherish it when it is fed as the last remaining bits from the utensil.

And trust me! They look incredibly adorable with their clumsy mouth while eating the delicate grains, But Rice has variants!

Let’s explore how suitable is long grain rice for the dogs

Ingredient in ‘Long grain’ rice – Is it edible for dogs

Rice being a universally known grain is available in every kitchen and people like to experiment with it. Long grain rice is a universal staple grain preferred across the globe. It has many variants with surprising advantages.

In Long grain rice, Basmati and jasmine rice has rich nutritional value that can be served to dogs. The domesticated dog’s nature has evolved with time from carnivore ancestors who were stuck to animal protein. The dogs today are fed grains and plants as a part of the diet along with 75% animal protein.

Health benefits of Long grain rice for dogs

Long grain rice has low fat

Low content of sodium

Include antioxidants that prevent disease and cognitive dysfunction in older dogs

Properties like calcium, phosphorus, and Vitamin D content helps dog in healthy bone

Fiber content supports bowel movement and helps in digestion

Carbohydrate in long grain rice boosts energy level and helps to improve cognitive function.

Is rice good for dogs?

Long grain rice for dogs is a good option for upset stomachs, but the question pertains to whether it can be a part of a regular diet. The differences between long, medium, and short grain rice must be discussed in depth.

Any white rice has calorie content for a high level of carbohydrates. Long grain rice does not comprise dietary fiber and does not raise blood sugar levels compared to short grain rice.

Long grain rice can be fed to dogs as they are omnivorous. Dogs could eat and digest food that comes from a plant. They can be given long grain rice or any other grain rice as a part of their diet. Dogs cannot be given too many grains as it is a rich diet and not precisely a balanced option. Instead, a small portion of long grain rice 2-3 times a week could add taste to a regular meal.

How much long-grain rice can a dog eat?

Dogs can be served long grain rice after it is cooked. Long grain rice can be served to dogs with some boiled chicken, but it should be moderate to avoid stomach problems. Long grain rice can be chewed easily and is a rich energy source for older dogs.

Long grain rice is digestible and cost-effective to be added to a dog’s diet. The noticeable fact is that cooked long grain rice can be a part of the regular diet, but there is a need to balance the nutrients, i.e., protein, fat of meat/oil, calcium, essential fatty acid, and carbohydrates.

Dogs weighing less than 5 pounds must be fed a total of ½ cup of long grain rice divided into small amounts throughout the day. Dogs weighing 5 -15 pounds should be fed about ½ to3/4 cup rice divided into small amounts throughout the day.

Difference between Long grain rice and Short grain rice

Long grain rice is not anything similar to regular rice size; it is four to five times longer and more comprehensive when cooked. The two prominent kinds of long grain rice are jasmine rice and basmati rice.

Long grain rice becomes dry after being cooked compared to medium or short grain rice and gets separated as individual grains. Compared to medium or small grain rice, long grain rice has less starch. Take note of the dog’s weight before you decide to include long grain rice in the dog’s diet.

How to serve Long grain rice to dogs?

Preparing cooked rice for dogs is not rocket science, but certain things must be noticed. Sometimes served rice is either too hard or turns mush, which really counts for dogs. Overcooked rice may cause diarrhea in dogs; therefore, simple steps must be taken while cooking perfect long-grain rice. It should be boiled in water without any seasonings or spices as it can be hazardous. Prepare long grain rice to avoid any difference.

Healthy dogs cherish rice with fresh veggies, both, or a warm soup with long grain rice. Keeping the preparation simple is pleasant for dogs. The experiment can be done with small amounts with an increase in portion as advised by a vet. A veterinarian can be consulted if facing any confusion regarding the portion of long grain rice in a meal.

Final Thought

In a nutshell, carbohydrates are an essential portion of a dog’s diet apart from protein and fat. The equation is simple, i.e., too many carbs will lead to weight gain in a dog. Until the dog is in a healthy weight, adding long grain rice to the meal is perfectly fine. Feed your dog with firm grains that stay fluffy and separate post-cooking. Long grain rice chosen for dogs is a great option for digestion, and preparation and is low in fiber.

Dogs are usually highly fascinated with human food, and we humans also have the habit of feeding them with what we eat every once in a while. Without thinking much, we have the habit of slipping some delicious treats into our dog’s mouth. But is it right and worth the risk? Is human food really safe for our dogs?

As we all know, our food habits are slowly undergoing transitions, as we are developing new food habits and trying out new cuisines and dishes. Should we be introducing our dogs, too, to such new items?

One such new item which is gaining all the hype is the salmon patties. These patties are indeed delicious. And we humans simply love them. But should we also indulge our dogs in this new culinary shift?

Let’s find out by closely analyzing all the factors.

What Are Salmon Patties Made Of?

It is a known fact that dogs are extremely curious animals and are intrigued by the food habits of their owners. So, it is very likely that if a dog owner undergoes some culinary changes, their dog might want to try the new cuisines too, like salmon patties. But is this delicious treat really healthy for our furry friends? We can get to know about this only when we know what salmon patties are made of.

Salmon patties, widely known as salmon cakes, are generally prepared with bread crumbs, chopped onions, and eggs for binding in all patties. The most important ingredient would be Salmon, of course. This could either be canned or fresh.

So basically, a salmon patty’s main key ingredients are Salmon, bread crumbs, onions, and eggs. Let us see if these ingredients are really health-giving or hazardous? But first, let us analyze whether the key ingredient, Salmon is good and healthy for dogs or not.

Is Salmon Good For Dogs?

Salmon is a popular fish known to be a superfood as it contains a lot of beneficial fats and nutrients. We do understand that it is great for humans, but is it really safe for dogs?

The key ingredient of the Salmon Patties being salmon; here are a few benefits and hazards of giving salmon to your furry friend –

Benefits Of Eating Salmon

Well, salmon is very rich in omega-3 fatty acids and protein. Among all the other fishes, salmon is one of the healthiest types of fish for our furry friend. It is known to contain vitamins like vitamin A, D, and B- complex. It also contains essential minerals like zinc, potassium, and magnesium. The few benefits of salmon for our dogs are that it helps maintain healthy fur and good skin our dogs.

More than that, it all cures the skin irritation and allergies that your dog might have. It is great for the improvement of joint mobility. Other than that, it is great for arthritis and makes the immune system strong.

Hazards Of Salmon

While we see that salmon can be extremely wholesome for the dog, we should be extremely cautious when providing our dogs with salmon treats. This is because when the salmon is raw or undercooked, it can contain different types of bacteria or parasites, which can harm our dogs and make them extremely sick.

It can also sometimes contain a worm-like parasite called the fluke, which can develop serious illnesses and leave our four-legged members with salmon poisoning which has side effects like vomiting, diarrhea, and dehydration. Therefore, it is best to serve the dogs properly cooked salmon patties.

However, salmon patties do contain other ingredients too. So, let us look at whether dogs should consume these other ingredients or not.

Are The Other Ingredients Of Salmon Patties Healthy For Your Dog?

Salmon patties contain many other ingredients other than salmon. It contains eggs, onions, and bread crumbs. A few people also add in garlic and other spices to make it more delicious. But are you doing the right thing by giving all of these eatables to your dog?

Talking about eggs, we are already well-versed with how safe eggs are for the dog. The same goes for the bread crumbs. Well, we don’t really see a problem there. However, a dog must never be fed onions as they can be really toxic for the dog. The same goes for other tastemakers and spices.

Moreover, a patty is made by frying it. Too much oil cannot be great for the dog. Hence, the oil part too can be an issue for the dogs. Therefore, a salmon patty that is being prepared for the dog should not contain onions, too much oil, and other spices.

Can Dogs Eat Salmon Patties?

Salmon is rich in omega-3 fatty acids; therefore, it is highly nutritious for our dogs, supporting its immune system. Providing salmon patties to our dogs can be a great way of introducing salmon to their diet, provided it does not contain hazardous ingredients like onions, spices, etc.

To add an extra punch of health, we can customize them by combining powdered eggshells and cod liver oil. We can also add some flaxseed in the ground form and some kelp powder. These customizations make the salmon patties extremely tasty and healthy for our furry friends. Moreover, we can avoid too much oil so that the salmon patties only provide the dog with nutrition and none of the damage.

How Often Can They Eat Salmon Patties?

Now that we know that salmon patties if cooked properly, are great for the dogs, we must also know how frequently can dogs have them.

Well, Salmon is a fish containing low levels of mercury. This means that our dogs can consume salmon patties frequently but in moderate quantities. Excessive quantities of Salmon can cause gastrointestinal diseases and make our dog very sick.

In a nutshell, we can provide our dogs with salmon patties once a week. However, we can provide up to 10gm of Salmon for every 500gm of the dog’s body weight. Any levels above this can be super dangerous.

Our Verdict

Salmon is one food item that can be great for dogs. Since we cannot feed raw salmon to the dogs, giving it to them in the form of a patty can be a great idea. The only thing to be sure of is that it should not contain toxic ingredients like onions, too much oil, and spices. All in all, containing all the right nutrients for our dog, salmon patties can be very healthy for the canine.

However, just like us humans, salmon could not suit a few dogs too. They might develop an allergy, or an adverse side effect, even if the salmon is fully cooked. Therefore, it is advised that you should always consult a vet before indulging in serving your dog some salmon patties.

Moreover, if you are giving your dog a salmon patty for the first time, make sure you give it a little portion of the patty, as you simply do not know how they or their system will react to it.

Like us humans, dogs too get bored of their daily meals. They, too, wish to eat and indulge in something new and exciting for meals. There is no denying that we humans, too, are tempted to feed our dogs with delightful and exciting food options.

Talking about ourselves, most of all just love a good bowl of spaghetti and meatballs. For a perfect cheat day, or even when we just want to lift up our spirits, a hot bowl of spaghetti and meatballs just makes our day. But would it do the same for the dog? Is serving some spaghetti and meatballs a good idea when it comes to our furry friends?

Well, we know that not all human food is good for dogs, so is spaghetti with meatball one of the food items that should be kept far away from the dogs, or can it be fed every once in a while?

Let’s find out by closely evaluating the ingredients of the dish and seeing as to how healthy they are for our canine friends.

Can Dogs Eat Spaghetti?

Spaghetti is one of the tastiest dishes that we all love. But is this love-worthy for our dogs too? Or will they be toxic like many other human food items?

Though with minimal or no nutrition value, spaghetti, which is a form of pasta, cannot be poisonous for the dogs. However, some dogs could still be having allergies to certain grains. In such cases, you should always consult a vet and give your dog super little quantity the first time you make this dish for it.

While eating spaghetti or any kind of pasta might not be a matter of concern, but the sauce which you add to make the spaghetti could be. Most sauces, canned or even made at home, contain onions and garlic, and many other spices, which ideally should be kept far away from the dog.

But if you are making your spaghetti without these vegetables, which are toxic for the dog, then, of course, having this form of pasta once in a while would not be a problem for most dogs.

Now that we have given the go-ahead to spaghetti, let us see if our furry friends can also enjoy some meatballs.

Can Dogs Eat Meatballs?

While your dog might be tempted to have some meatball for all the obvious reasons, it might not be the best idea to blindly give it some. As responsible dog parents, you should always check what’s precisely therein that meatball.

While there is no denying that meat is great for the dog, it might contain some other toxic ingredients which might not make your dog healthy or happy. Moreover, you just need to make sure if the meatballs are fresh and not old enough to upset the dog’s stomach and digestive system.

Ingredients most commonly found in meatballs include cheese, onions, garlic, and much more, which are a strict NO-NO for the dog. However, if your meatball is homemade and does not consist of such harmful ingredients, then it can indeed and happily be given to your furry friend.

So does this mean that your dog can eat spaghetti and meatballs?

What About Spaghetti and Meatballs?

While spaghetti is neither healthy nor harmful for the dog, it should still be given in moderation, as it is not too great for your four-legged member. Moreover, in some cases, it might not even suit the dog if it is allergic to certain grains.

Spaghetti is incomplete without the tangy tomato sauce. However, this is something that is a BIG NO for the dogs. Tomatoes should never be given to dogs, as they are one of the toxic vegetables which can lead to serious consequences.

Apart from that, if your sauce consists of onions, garlic, and other spices, then it’s best to keep the spaghetti away from your dog, as these can leave the dog with serious health hazards.

Talking about meatballs in the spaghetti, if you have sorted out the issue of the sauce, then you sure can include some meatballs in the spaghetti for that extra punch of flavor and yumminess. However, make sure that the meatball is fresh and free from onion, cheese, and other toxic ingredients. While meatballs even have eggs and breadcrumbs, but these are fine for the dog.

Therefore, your dog can surely indulge in a nice bowl of spaghetti with meatballs, provided it does not consist of the ingredients mentioned above, which will make the spaghetti tastier, but unhealthier for your canine friend.

Our Verdict

Our dogs have full rights to indulge in delicious and sumptuous meals, just like us. However, with our furry friends, we just need to be a little more conscious about what’s there in their food.

In the case of spaghetti with meatballs, your dog can surely enjoy some of this dish, provided it is free from all the hazardous foodstuff. However, before feeding your dog some of this dish, make sure that the vet approves of it. On top of that, always ensure that you serve just a limited amount, and that too, not very frequently. This way, your four-legged member will be happy in eating and trying out new things and will be fit and fabulous too!

Corn, another name for maize, is a cereal that is among the most popular grains in the world. In many countries like the US, the corn on the cob is a summertime favorite food. Besides, many tasty cuisines people eat in the restaurants also have this cereal in them. In fact, corn is not only used to make appetizing dishes. They are greatly nutritious and healthy too. But, what about the corn husks?

Its often seen that when you have gone to any family picnic with your dog, and eating corn cobs or other things wrapped in corn husks, your dog wants the foods along with the corn husks for eating. They keep on prowling around you for getting that. What should you do at that moment? Are the corn husks equally healthy for your dog like the corn? Should it be ok if you allow your dogs to eat corn husks or it must be avoided? In this write-up, you will get every answer to your questions regarding corn husks. Just hold your excitement for some time and keep reading on.

Should You Feed Your Dog Corn Husks?

The answer is a big ‘No’. Though feeding a reasonable amount of corn to your dog is a healthy choice on your part, but it’s not the case with the corn husks. Yes! corn if cooked or canned is perfectly fine and healthful for your doggy. Even, the off-cob kernels are also very good for your pet. The reason behind it is that corn is a very nutritious cereal and your dog will get various nutrients by consuming it. But, it is not the same with the corn husks.

The corn husks have zero nutrients and by consuming them your doggy will get no nutrition at all. On the contrary, it will induce gas in the stomach of your pooch and it will feel a lot of discomfort for that. Also, your dog will experience digestive issues on eating corn husks. It is because the skins of most of the fruits and vegetables are difficult to digest and this is the same with the corn husks too.

It’s not that eating corn husks is impossible for your dog or it can’t chew the husks. But, it is generally not recommended to feed the dogs with corn husks just to avoid any complications. So, if you want to feed your dogs with corn, feed it in a limited amount. Otherwise, your doggy will feel gassy and suffer from digestive problems. But, stay completely away from corn husks.

Are Corn Husks Not Nutritious For Your Doggy?

Corn husks are not at all nutritious for your doggy. Though corn has many nutrients in it and is a healthy cereal, corn husks have zero nutrients. So, why feed your doggy a food like corn husk that has no nutritious benefit for it? After all, your doggy is one of your loving family members and you have the option of a lot of nutritious foods for it.

Choosing healthy and nourishing foods for your dog will make it healthy. Thus, instead of feeding your dog something that is waste and must go to the dustbin, make a nutritious diet chart for it. Feed it accordingly. You may also include corn-related cuisines in the diet in reasonable proportion for your dog. But, a no-no to the corn husks.

Come! Let us clarify the difference between the corn nutrition facts & that of corn husks. It will help you to choose the nutritious one among the two for your pet.

1 medium-sized corn ear ( sweet & yellow), comprises 88 calories, 15 milligrams of sodium, 2 grams of fiber, 6.4 grams of sugar, 19 grams of carbs, 1.4 grams of fat, and 3.3 grams of protein.

On the other hand, corn husks provide hardly any nutritional value. Even the standards nutritional facts state 0 calories from corn husks.

So, it’s not very difficult to understand which one to choose among the two. Besides, corn has many health benefits for your dog. Eating corn will reduce the chance of Type Two Diabetes for your dog. It may also prevent colon cancer in your dog and support its healthy weight management. Besides, your dog will have good eyesight and heart health with the consumption of this cereal. But, stay away from corn if you see any symptoms of allergy in your dog after feeding it.

Also, you must always keep away your pooch from the corn husks as they are not at all recommendable for dogs.

Are Corn Husks Dangerous For Your Dogs?

Corn husks are generally not poisonous for your dog. But in some situations, consuming it can be fatal for dogs.

If your dog by anyhow gulped some portion of corn husks scattered before him and a piece of the corn husk gets blocked to its intestine, it will face severe digestive issues. The situation may also become life-threatening for your dog. Also, your dog may get choked. So, it is always better to keeping corn husks away from your dog.

How To Know If Your Dog Is Facing Any Intestinal Obstruction After Eating Some Corn Husks?

In case your dog has accidentally swallowed greedily some corn husks without your knowledge, then look out for some symptoms. These signs will tell you if your dog is confronting any intestinal blockage or discomfort:

Keep a watch on your dog if it is vomiting or not.

A problem in passing stool: See if your pooch is facing any difficulty in passing out its bowel movements

Losing of appetite: Place some foods before it and see if it has an appetite for the food that you placed before it. Loss of appetite is a symptom of intestinal obstruction and severe digestive problems.

Watch your dog’s activity and try to understand if it is having any abdominal pain or not. Abdominal pain will make your dog restless.

See if your dog is showing any sign of restlessness. If you find it impossible to make it sit silently at a place, then it is encountering digestive issues.

Also, how severe is your dog’s digestive problem, depends on several factors. They are:

How much of the husk did they consume?

If your dog has consumed a few corn husks, then it is likely that it will suffer only some mild digestive problems. But, consuming a large number of corn husks is definitely calls an appointment to the vet.

What’s your dog’s size?

If your dog is small in size, it will have less immunity in fighting digestive issues. Also, it will have less capability for digestion of the corn husks. Hence, serious complications may arise for your puppy.

The way your dog chewed the husks

If your dog has well-chewed the corn husks, before finally gulping it, then fewer digestive issues may happen. But, if not well-chewed, serious issues may occur.

Our Verdict

It’s true that we love our dogs and think of always trying something new for them that they love to eat. Also, we cannot resist giving our lovely pets something that they want from us. But, it’s always wise to avoid giving your dog something out of love that will harm it later.

So, it’s better to keep the corn husks away from your dogs. Our verdict is that corn husk is not at all good for your dog. It shouldn’t be given to your pet in any form. Feeding a large amount of it can be life-threatening. Better to visit your local vet if you think your dog has eaten it by accident.

Cauliflower, an extremely healthy green vegetable, was once neglected by people. But, nowadays it has become so popular that you will see it regularly on the restaurant tables. It’s not only a treat for its delicacy but also a healthy choice for humans as well as their pet dogs. But, what about the cauliflower leaves? Are they equally healthy for your dogs? And will your dog find it tasty to eat those leaves? Well! The answer is “YES”. The cauliflower leaves are equally healthy and tasty for your dogs.

The Cauliflower leaves comprise a modest proportion of fiber, vitamins, folate, selenium, calcium, and potassium. These nutrients will strengthen your dog’s immune system and at the same time, your dog will happily eat these veggie leaves. Come, let us delve deep into it.

Is it safe to feed your dog cauliflower leaves?

Yes, cauliflower leaves are perfectly safe for your dogs to eat. In fact, the florets of the cauliflower are also safe for your dog’s consumption. Moreover, your dogs will find both the leaves and florets of the cauliflower yummy to eat. But, do avoid feeding them the stems. They are not safe for your pet.

Dark green veggies are well-known for their incredible healthfulness, and cauliflower is no exception. Also, like other dark green veggies, it is a source of important vitamins and minerals.

Yes, indeed, the leaves of cauliflower are not that dark like the dark green vegetables, but they are at least green. So, at least some amount of goodness is bound to be present in those leaves. They do also have many important nutrients in them. Curious to know what are those nutrients? Keep on reading.

Nutrition contents in cauliflower leaves & its advantages

According to the research of some Indian scientists who analyzed these leaves, the nutrition in cauliflower leaves (of a 100-gram serving) comprises 60 calories. Also, it has 5.9 grams of protein, 1.3 grams of fat, 7.6 grams of carbohydrate, and 2 grams of fiber. Besides, cauliflower leaves are also enriched with 41 milligrams of iron, and 49.5 milligrams of Beta Carotene. They are a source of 80 grams of water, 626 milligrams of calcium, and 107 milligrams of phosphorus.

In contrast, the nutrition contents of a 100 gram serving of cauliflower, the vegetable, comprise 25 calories. Also, it has 1.9 grams of protein, 0.3 grams of fat, 5 grams of carbohydrate, and 2 grams of fiber. Besides, cauliflower is also enriched with 42 milligrams of iron. It has no Beta Carotene in it. The veggie is moreover a source of 80 grams of water, 626 milligrams of calcium, and 107 milligrams of phosphorus.

So, if we compare the nutrition facts of both the cauliflower and its leaves, we will find that the vitamins and minerals are richer in cauliflower leaves than in the cauliflower itself.

It is really fantastic. The cauliflower leaves that were previously used to go to the waste bin are now healthy food for your pet. What’s better than that?

Let’s go for a detailed analysis regarding the advantages of cauliflower leaves for your dogs in respect of their nutritional terms.

Every cell in your doggy’s body needs protein for its growth and good health. And, the cauliflower leaves provide triple the quantity of it than cauliflower itself.

Also, 150 percent of more carbohydrates are present in these leaves than that in the veggie. So, they will provide your dog with energy to thrive & survive.

Even, the leaves of cauliflower comprise calcium that is 30 times more than the vegetable itself. And, do we need to mention that this calcium will make your doggy’s bones and teeth stronger?

Other than calcium, the leaves of cauliflower are a rich source of phosphorus. In fact, they have more than double the amount of phosphorus in them than it is present in the veggie. Ok, do you need some explanation on how this mineral will benefit your dog? Then, let us explain it a bit. Being the building block of a body, phosphorus will assist in maintaining the healthy cells & strong bones of your dog.

Besides, a few minerals like fiber and iron, are present in both the cauliflower leaves and the cauliflower veg in equal proportion. These minerals are also very beneficial for your dog’s body.

In what form should you feed it to your dogs- raw or cooked?

Now that you have known everything about the nutrition and benefits of cauliflower leaves for your dog, you will definitely think of feeding it with the leaves. But, in what form should you feed the cauliflower leaves to your dog? Should it be raw or cooked?

We also have an answer to that. There is no difference in the nutrition content of the cauliflower leaves depending on whether it is raw or cooked. So, in whatever form you feed the leaves to your dog, it will get the same nutrition. But, since a dog’s digestive zone is short as compared to a human being’s digestive zone, it is better to cook the leaves before feeding your dog. You can boil, steam, roast, bake, or grill the cauliflower leaves for giving your dog a treat.

How much cauliflower leaves should you feed your dog?

If your doggy has not tried cauliflower leaves before, then it is better, to begin with, a little portion. You should decide the portion of the leaves according to your dog’s size.

Will it be ok to feed cauliflower leaves to your dogs daily?

Well! The answer to this question is very simple. Just compare it with yourself and you will get the answer. When a new food is introduced to you, then do you eat the food daily? Nay! You eat the food occasionally and make your digestive system get adjusted to it. And, once you get adjusted to the new food, you increase the frequency of its consumption.

The same thing applies to your dog as well. If cauliflower leaves are a new kind of food for your dog, then avoid giving them to your dog daily. On the contrary, increase the frequency of its consumption gradually for your dog. And, your dog’s digestive system will get adjusted to the food. However, if your dog has already get habituated with this food, then nothing to worry about. You can give a small portion of this food (or in moderation) to your doggy daily. But, don’t add more than 50 grams of cauliflower leaves to your dog’s diet, if your dog is having it on a daily basis.

Precautions on feeding your dogs with cauliflower leaves

Cauliflower leaves are no doubt a healthy as well as luscious choice for your dog. But, some precautions are needed to be followed in this regard. Excess feeding of these leaves can make your pet gassy and it may also lead to bowel irregularity. So, limit the intake of this food for your dog

Also, it will be better to introduce this food in the cooked form to your doggy rather than in the raw form. It will keep your dog away from any digestive problems.

And, to be realistic, though feeding cauliflower to your pet is a nice idea, it is definitely not essential for your dog. So, you may also choose this food to give some occasional treats for your doggy.

Our Verdict

Thus, Cauliflower leaves are totally safe for your dog, provided you maintain the above precautions. Especially, if your dog is lean and weak, then the vitamins, calcium, and phosphorus in them will make it strong. But, don’t force the food on your dog to make it stronger. It will have the opposite effect on your dog. Just try to make the food tasty by cooking it in different styles, and your dog will happily feed it. Also, if you have any doubt regarding this diet for your dog, take the advice of a vet. He will guide you through it.

German shepherds in general are considered healthy dogs. In fact, what better evidence is there, other than the fact that they are called upon by national governments to protect their citizens as a part of the k9 Human dog police units.

However, it is true that selective breeding to allow for the best line of German shepherds to breed has also led to the perpetuation of certain genetic fault lines.

Eyes too have become a victim of these selective breeding techniques. Apart from these, certain external and environmental factors can also contribute to vision defaults in these magnificent beasts.

However, lose no hope! Most of these diseases are curable by intervention, provided you remain fully aware and always have an eye on your Canine friend’s optimal health.

To help you get a hang of the vision issues that might plague your German Shepherd, here are some of the most common vision problems in German shepherds are:

Vision Problems In German Shepherds

1. Pannus

The medical name for Pannus is Chronic Superficial Keratitis. To put it in simple layman terms, scar tissues and blood vessels cover the cornea of the eye, and if the progression is not taken care of at the earliest, it can lead to vision loss in your German shepherd.

It usually starts in a sneaking manner from the lateral side of the eye in form of a pink mass. It progresses with pigmentation and scarring of the cornea and can be associated with mucous discharge.

Common symptoms among German shepherds tend to be black or brown pigmentation in the cornea, bloodshot eyes with a thin pink covering, excessive weeping, and thickening of third eyelids.

It usually affects middle-aged German shepherds and tends to affect both eyes. Although the causes of this condition are not absolutely clear, it is largely believed to be an autoimmune disease.

The factors aggravating the situation are high altitudes, increased exposure to Ultraviolet light, and smoke. German shepherds that are requested at higher altitude regions have a tendency towards this disease, combined with previous predisposing genetic factors.

Treatment usually involves corticosteroids or immune-modulating drugs like cyclosporine. In some cases, surgery is recommended.

However, timely intervention with topical steroids can help curtail this disease to a large extent.

2. Cherry Eye

Cherry Eye is a name given to the prolapsed tear gland at the base of the third eyelid of the dog. It is because of the rounded appearance that the gland projects, along with a smooth and hyperemic (blood vessels filled)appearance, that the term ‘ Cherry eye’ is attributed to the disease that infects the Apple-of-our- eye German shepherd dog.

If the situation is not corrected in the due course, the cherry eye affects the secretory glands and leads to their malfunctioning.

This implies that the dog can no longer shed tears.

Happy news? Not at all.

The tears are important to keeps the eye wet and act as a protection against a number of external agents. Thus, a dried-up eye leads to Dry eye syndrome or Dry Keratoconjunctivitis.

Symptoms among German shepherds include a pink or red rounded structure at the medial angle of the eye. There is significant inflammation of the eye tissues and excessive tearing.

Conservative treatment in the case of Cherry eye disease usually always relapses and hence surgery is usually recommended as the best course of action. The disease needs to be usually followed up for the rest of the dog’s life as chances of relapse still remain.

It usually affects young German shepherd pups below 1 year of age. It usually occurs in only one eye and bilateral infections are considered very rare.

3. Progressive Retinal Atrophy

Progressive retinal atrophy is another very common vision loss disease among German shepherd dogs.

This disease affects the photoreceptor cells present in the dog’s retina. Retina is the light-sensitive layer that is found at the back of the eye. The photoreceptor cells in the retina are of two types- Rod cells, which control the light, and the cone cells, which help in color perception.

Progressive retinal atrophy usually affects both types of cells. Atrophy signifies the general wasting of the retinal tissue.

It is a genetic disease that is usually autosomal recessive in most breeds.

The early onset PRA is usually diagnosed within 2 to 3 months while the late-onset PRA can be diagnosed as late as 3 to 9 years.

The first symptoms of the disease are night blindness and the German shepherd dog displays nervousness after the dark hours. Eyes appear very reflective when light shines on them and pupils appear dilated.

As mentioned, it is an inherited disease and usually affects both eyes. As of now, no effective treatment plan has been formulated for this disease. Generally, dogs affected by the disease are discouraged from breeding.

4. Glaucoma

Glaucoma is a disease that is associated with increased intraocular pressure in the eye. This in turn ends up damaging the retinal tissue in the eye which can lead to permanent vision loss. Acute Glaucoma is considered a medical emergency.

Primary Glaucoma is associated with an inherited defective drainage angle and some breeds are especially prone to it.

Secondary glaucoma, on the other hand, is caused by injury to the eye, which in turn leads to an increase in intraocular pressure.

The common symptoms of Glaucoma are pain in the eye, swelling, watery discharge, and loss of appetite. The cornea may appear bluish in color.

The treatment includes efforts at the drainage of the eye fluid through medication and surgery. Analgesics are given to relieve the pain. Follow-up must be done. Prognosis depends on the extent of damage caused by the disease before intervention was done.

5. Cataract

Yes, dogs can have Cataracts too. Cataract is the opacity that develops inside the lens of the dog. It is usually hereditary and German shepherds too are predisposed towards it.

Sometimes cataracts may occur as a secondary implication of other inherited diseases among German shepherds, for e.g., Progressive retinal atrophy or even Glaucoma. Cataracts can also occur if your German shepherd is diagnosed with diabetes.

It may occur in one or both eyes.

Vision loss and loss of agility among German shepherds may point towards cataract. A German shepherd may however be able to overcome vision loss if there is partial opacity or point opacity in the lens.

Generally, medication is not effective to stop the progression of the cataract if it is the primary disease and surgical removal of the opacity is the only viable mean. At times, your vet may also put in place an artificial lens, especially if the dog is small.

Follow-up on regular basis is advised and timely intervention can avoid blindness.

6. Entropion

Entropion is a condition in German shepherds which causes the eyelids to roll inwards towards the eye. It can affect one or both eyelids and either of the eyes.

This causes scratches and rashes in the dog’s eye and can compromise his vision.

Symptoms include recurrent corneal ulcers, mucous discharge from eyes, discomfort, and excessive tearing.

Eye ointments are available as a palliative treatment for Entropion. Sometimes the pups grow out of it. However, if this does not occur, surgery is the next course of action. It usually shows very good results.

Summing up,

Vision is an important dimension of the personality of the German shepherd dog. It is thus of utmost importance that its optimum care is taken.

You need to be on a constant lookout for any eye inflammation or watery discharge, especially if you often subject your dogs to areas with excessive smoke discharge (and yeah, you can lose that cigarette too!).

Getting your pup checked by a vet for possible congenital vision defects is also a good idea. Keep that crust around the eyes clean and wash their eyes once in a while with highly diluted saltwater. Also, make sure to keep their diet healthy and you will always have those gooey eyes to yourself that convey a world of warmth.

And speaking of the gooey eyes and non-verbal conversation, find out what your German shepherd means when he places his paw on you.

Dogs are always intrigued to try human food, and we humans, too, are always on the lookout for something healthy for our dogs. From multigrain bread to chapatis in Indian households, we try to feed our furry friends everything that is good for them. Another flour that is supposed to be super healthy for us humans is coconut flour. Enriched with all great nutrients, minerals, and everything healthy, a lot of us have switched to this flour for health reasons and to be gluten-free.

But is this flour equally healthy for our four-legged members? It is true that many dog parents are indulging in pet treats made up of coconut flour for their dogs. But is it really worth the hype? Is it something that should be going inside your dog? Let’s dig deep and find out if coconut flour would really be beneficial for your furry member.

Since we know that coconut flour is made up of coconut, let’s first comprehend if dogs should eat coconut or not.

Coconut For Dogs – Healthy Or Not?

Coconut flour is made by grinding the pulp of the coconut into a fine powder. Hence, it’s important to see if coconut is good for dogs or not. Many of us dog parents often think if coconuts are safe and beneficial for our furry four-legged members or not? The answer to this is a sure shot YES!

Coconut is great for dogs. It is absolutely non-toxic for all dogs. It contains lauric acid, which decreases inflammation. It is also packed with antioxidants, which help boost the immunity system. Moreover, it is great for the skin and the fur of dogs.

However, it also has properties that have medium-chain triglycerides, which can cause negative impacts on the body of the dog-like gastrointestinal issues, digestive issues, and bloating.

So, if coconut is a go-ahead for our lovable dogs, is coconut flour too okay to give?

Can Dogs Eat Coconut Flour?

A lot of us humans are shifting our focus from wheat and all-purpose flour to coconut flour to eat clean and gluten-free. Many of us want the same for our dogs. But everything that is good for us need not necessarily be good and healthy for the dogs too. So, is coconut flour beneficial for our dogs? Let’s find out if it is a hit or a pass!

Coconut flour is made from the coconut itself. The pulp of the coconut is ground into a fine powder, and that’s when you call it coconut flour. The truth is coconut flour is excellent for dogs. Being high in plant proteins and fiber, this is a fabulous gluten-free choice for dogs. Aside from being nutritious, healthy, and wholesome, it is also super tasty, just like the flesh of coconuts.

Being rich in vitamin B6, vitamin C, potassium, and calcium, this flour is a great option for all dogs. However, just like coconut, this too has medium-chain triglycerides, which can be a bit of a concern if you are feeding your dog this flour too often. Therefore, it’s always beneficial to consult the dog’s vet before adding this into their diet.

Benefits Of Coconut Flour

Now that we have established that coconut flour is amazing for dogs let’s see what all benefits it provides to our furry friends. Made ground coconut meat, it is low in carbs and a gluten-free option for dogs. Being high in plant-based protein and great in fiber, this acts as a healthy option for most dogs.

Another great thing about this flour is that the continuous consumption of this flour can decrease blood sugar levels, which is great for dogs who have a persistent tendency of having high sugar.

Moreover, coconut flour is rich in vitamins and minerals. It has vitamin B9 (folate), vitamin C, niacin, vitamin B6, phosphorus, manganese, selenium, amino acids, calcium, and potassium. With so many vitamins and minerals, you can imagine what wonders it can do to the health of your little dog.

It is also true that coconut flour might cost you a few extra bucks, but the benefits are purely worth the extra money that you are paying. However, just be careful as this can be fattening for a few breeds, as it has a high number of calories. So make sure to consult the dog’s vet before indulging in coconut flour for your dog.

Hence, just like dried coconut, and coconut yogurt, coconut flour too, is a great healthy option for your dogs.

What Other Flours Are Good For Our Furry Friends?

We live in times where we have endless options when it comes to food. From almond flour to oat flour to coconut flour, there are a ton of options available today. Let’s look at some other options and compare them with coconut flour to see the best fit option.

Almond Flour

For dogs that are allergic to wheat flour, almond flour is one of the best substitutes. Being high in protein and low in carbohydrates, this flour is amazing when it comes to your dog’s health. This flour contains vitamin E, copper, proteins, and fiber, along with some great minerals.

Oat Flour

Oat flour is a great option if you are into baking goodies for your dogs. Being low in sugar, gluten-free, full of nutrients, antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals, this flour is the first choice for most dog parents.

Tortilla Flour

Be it a taco or tortillas; this flour is not such a great option for dogs. So it is always better to keep these treats to yourself. These are neither high in quality, not nutritionally dense; therefore, if your dogs are not eating this flour, it is not missing out on anything.

Whole Wheat Flour

Packed with vitamins, minerals, protein, and fiber, this flour contains loads of antioxidants which are great for dogs. However, some dogs are gluten intolerant. Probably not a good option for them.

Let’s now compare these flours and find out if coconut flour is really the richest of them all. Please note, All the quantities are per 100gm.

FLOUR

PROTEIN

FIBER

CALORIES

CARBOHYDRATES

Coconut Flour

20g

33.3g

400Kcal

60g

Oat Flour

13.33g

10g

400Kcal

73.33g

Whole Wheat Flour

13.2g

10.7g

340Kcal

72g

Almond Flour

21.43g

7.1g

607Kcal

21.43g

A lot of dog parents are switching their dog’s flour from wheat to coconut. In our opinion, coconut flour is surely a hit, as it contains everything good. However, the frequency and the quantity should be kept in mind, or should be consulted with a vet, so that this healthy option does not harm your furry friend; rather, it provides all the goodness.
